This is exact age when we began to look and act like our parents

This is exact age when we began to look and act like our parentsThis is exact age when we began to look and act like our parentsUK surgeon, Dr. Julian De Silva interviewed 2,000 men and women to determine when we begin to morph into our parents. In many instances, Dr. Silvas data suggests that the onset of thisphenomenon has a lot to do with when we have children of our own.De Silva explains, Becoming parents is the main trigger and lifestyle factors are also important. More than 50% of the English women observed in the study reported that they stopped rebelling against their moms when they entered their thirties and instead began emulating them. A couple of years after childbirth, many of the female respondents reported watching similar TV shows, adopting similar expressions and picking up the same hobbies.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreMale participants expressed a similar me tamorphosis after having their first child. They found themselves taking on similar political views as their fathers, listening to the same music and enacting in gleichem abstand nebeneinander practical philosophies. Not too far from the treeGiven that the study was conducted in England, where the average age of childbirth for women is 30.5, it follows that the women surveyed found themselves mimicking their moms around the age of 33. Similarly, the average UK man has their first kid around the age of 33.5, a little less than a year before the male respondents began to imitate their fathers. The aping didnt just stop with behavioral traits, although the parallels to the physical transformation that accompanies aging is a process that was less celebrated by both men and women surveyees. It is an inevitable part of aging but a process lots of people want to put off for as long as possible, Dr. Silva expounds. It is one of the reasons why the average age of first-time cosmetic surgery is coming down for both sexes. The average UK woman considers going under the knife at around 37, with the average Englishmen getting cosmetic procedures at about 43. More people are trying to delay this onset of middle age to improve their appearance and levels of self-confidence, says Dr. Silva. On balance, the prominent surgeon believes we should embrace this process of imitation.Often, when people have children their parents retire the strict policies they exercised when they were younger in favor of a morenurturing role. This ignites the torch to be passed along. Developing similar parenting techniques tends to have a bleed over effect into our interests and mannerisms. As far as Dr. Silva is concerned, this is an inevitable occurrence that should be celebrated. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double y our productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

The Worst Job Interview Answers You Could Ever Give

The Worst Job Interview Answers You Could Ever GiveThe Worst Job Interview Answers You Could Ever GiveThere are many different ways to blow a job interview and turn off an employer. Subpar responses to interview questions reveal flaws in your attitude, preparation, interest in the job, or qualifications to get the work done well. They may also reflect negatively on your work ethic or your ability to work well with others. Here are a few examples of the worst types of answers to interview questions, along with tips on what you can say instead to impress the interviewer. Why Should We Hire You? schwimmbad answers I dont know. It sounds like a good job. Saying you dont know or giving a vague answer is never a good way to respond to any interview question. If you need to, take a little time to think about an answer before you respond. Instead, respond to the question Why should we hire you? with an answer that illustrates how your qualifications and strengths fit the job, along with some anecdotes to illustrate your qualifications. Tell Me About Your Last Job Bad answer Didnt you look at my resume? A snide Didnt you look at my resume? is bedrngnis the way to answer questions about your employment history. Be prepared to discuss your previous jobs with the interviewer, and review your resume ahead of time so you know where you worked when. What Did You Like Least About Your Previous Position? Bad answer I hated the job and the company. They were awful to work for. Its important not to badmouth the companies or people you worked for because you dont know what relationships they may have with the company youre interviewing with. I once had an applicant who told me that her employer was the worst place to work ever. That employer happened to be our biggest and most important customer. Its always a good strategy to focus on the positives when discussing your previous job, including how you grew from your experiences. What Are Your Strengths? Bad answers I do good work. Im the best. Im not sure, but Im a good learner. Vague answers dont go over well. The interviewer wants to know what strengths you have that specifically relate to the job you are being considered for. When answering questions about your strengths, talk about the skills you have as they relate to the job, rather than giving general answers. Can You Share a Weakness? Bad answers I cant think of any right now. I tend to lose my patience with incompetent people. You always need to be prepared to share a weakness so you can demonstrate that you are committed to professional growth and have some self-insight. Make sure any weakness does not create serious doubt about your willingness or ability to carry out the central functions of the job at hand. When asked about weaknesses, its a good idea to frame your answer around skills youve improved upon. Why Were You Fired? Bad answers I failed that drug test. I missed too much work. Be very careful when you answer que stions about being fired. Keep what you say about being fired as brief as possible. You could talk about how being cut loose was a blessing, or how you and your employer came to a mutual understanding. Why Have You Decided to Apply for This Position? Bad answers I was looking through the job ads and it seemed interesting. I was getting bored with my current job. Rather than such vague answers, a better approach would be to cite specific reasons why the job is appealing and fits in with your overall career aspirations. When asked why you want a job, you should show that you have researched the company and prove that you are a good fit for the job. Where Do You See Yourself 5 Years From Now? Bad answers In your job. I hate that question. Most of us do hate this question, but a better answer to where you see yourself in five years is to speak about what you would like to learn and accomplish during that time, with an emphasis on excelling in the job for which you are intervie wing. Try to research a career path flowing from the job for which you are interviewing and reference a realistic goal for your progress. It is also acceptable to ask the interviewer for some common positions to which one might progress if one is successful in the initial position and then use that information to help frame your answer. Do You Work Well With Others? Bad answers My co-workers didnt like me, but I think it was because they were intimidated by me. I get along with most people, but others really aggravate me. Rather than bad mouthing your co-workers, its important to let the interviewer know that you get along well with everyone at work. Companies dont want to hire difficult employees, and if you let them know during the interview that you arent easy to get along with, you probably wont get the job. Why Should We Hire You? Bad answers Im the best one for the job. I am great with people and a hard worker. Rather than being so vague, when faced with the question of why you should be hired, be ready to mention six assets that will help you to succeed in the job. Be ready to reference examples of how you have applied those strengths to add value in various work, school or volunteer scenarios. Tell Me About Yourself Bad answer Im a huge fan of the Yankees and avid softball player with the gift of gab Im usually the life of the party. Generally, you will be better off by using this opening to mention some of your professionally oriented attributes that will help you get the job done. You can add one or two personal items at the end to round things out. For example, if you were applying for a job as a recruiter you might say something like, I am a good listener and a skilled interviewer who can usually read people well. Or At ABC company, the retention rate of my hires was 20 percent above the department average. I have taken up golf and love it but am struggling to shoot less than 100. Tell Me How You Were Able to Expand Sales by 25 Per cent? Bad answer Its hard to say, but Im a great salesman. Make sure you can back up any assertions on your resume with some concrete details. In this example, you might cite your traits as a successful salesperson and/or specific techniques/strategies that you employed to generate sales. Do You Have Any Questions for Me? Bad answers Do I have to work overtime? I dont have any questions. How much vacation will I get? How much is the employee discount? When the tables are turned, always prepare some questions that relate to the job itself and the role you will play, training you will receive, career paths, or other professional concerns. Questions about vacation time and benefits can wait until after you have been offered a position.

There is a superpower within us all

There is a superpower within us allThere is a superpower within us allTed Strollo welches an Italian immigrant and master wood carver who came to California for a better life. He had few possessions, no family and no job.Illustrations by John Weiss. He built a little cabin in the woods above the town of Los Gatos. He drank acorn coffee. He was a kind man and a master woodworker. Out of a single piece of wood he created an amazing sculpture with perfect cylindrical balls in the middle. He called the piece his mystery tree of life.Ted Strollos life was quiet and solitary, until the day he was struck by a vehicle and hurled twenty feet through the air.The Mystery Tree ofLifeMy father, an administrative law judge, was driving home from work when he witnessed the accident. He pulled over and rendered aid. He followed the ambulance to the hospital and spoke to the police and doctors. My father learned that the victim was an Italian immigrant named Ted Strollo, and that he had no family. He d iscovered that Ted possessed no money for legal representation, so he decided to intervene and help.Ted spent over a month in our home recuperating. He stayed in our guest room and my mother prepared his meals and did his laundry. When he recovered my father found him an affordable apartment and secured some state benefits. We used to visit Ted on weekends. My father would buy him Stella Dora cookies and new socks. Dad once told me,Johnny, the elderly are often forgotten and overlooked. They have much to teach us if were willing to take the time and listen.I never forgot that. Before Ted Strollo passed away he gave my father his prized wooden sculpture, the mystery tree of life. We kept it in our family for many years before Dad donated it to an Italian cultural society. The Son Became theFatherMy father lost his battle with dementia and renal complications in 2004. It had been a difficult couple of years for me. In many ways, the father became the son and the son became the father. I was so thankful I had the opportunity to be there for him.I shepherded my father through his medical odyssey and handled all the legal arrangements for my mother. We held a beautiful memorial, buried Dad and tried to return to our daily lives.I read once about something called, the second death. When we die, our loved ones live on and remember us. They reminisce about the past and our lives together. They look at the old photographs.Sometimes they pass down stories about us to their grandchildren. But eventually, we are forgotten. And that is our second death. The Superpower In UsAllEach of us holds a superpower within us. notlage the kind of superpower we see in Spiderman movies, but a real superpower that can be wielded by young and old alike.I watched my father use his superpower the day he helped Ted Strollo and brought him home to recuperate. My mother used her superpower too, cooking and caring for Ted.What is this mysterious superpower?Kindness. Each of us has the power to imp rove the lives of others. Whether buying a homeless man a cup of coffee, nursing an Italian immigrant back to health, or helping your kids with their homework.Perhaps we will never know how our charitable actions help redirect a wayward soul. Maybe our kindnesses will be forgotten with subsequent generations as we approach our second death.Thats okay.True heroes dont act for personal glory but for the greater good.Who knows how many acts of kindness my father set in motion by helping Ted Strollo? How many people did Ted Strollo positively nichts von in his remaining years?A Sort of Grace in ThisWorldWe may never know, but kindness and charitable actions towards others produce a sort of grace in this world. Such actions make the world a better place. They elevate humanity. We may forget the names of these angels on earth who selflessly help others, but through their kindnesses and charity, they make a difference. When we emulate them, we inch a bit closer to the divine. And that is a m uch greater thing than personal legacy.Learn to wield your superpower. Its easy to forget because life gets in the way. Still, your act of kindness today may help someone assist another tomorrow. A positive chain reaction will bloom, thus improving the lives of many down through the generations. It will enrich your soul, too.People who spread kindness and charity among others may never see the positive ripples, but they contribute to the best of us. Perhaps a piece of their spirit lives on in us.In this way, we transcend our second death and become part of the eternal dignity of mankind. Kindness is a superpower that we all possess. Before YouGoImJohn P. Weiss.I paint, draw and write about life. Thanks for reading. This article first appeared on Medium.
