Now is the time to talk about mental health

Now is the time to talk about mental health William More is a current student at Exeter, and completed a placement last year with Enterprise. He shares his experience of being diagnosed with severe OCD, and finally getting the treatment he needed. (This post originally appeared on Enterprise’s careers blog). William More, current Exeter student on a placement with Enterprise It is okay not to be okay. This is a message that’s really important everyone knows â€" perfection is a myth and as a society we need to be easier on ourselves. For a long time, since around GCSEs time, I have struggled with a mental illness that I could never pin down. I knew that things weren’t right, but I never had an explanation for what I was going through. On the surface things were okay, my grades were certainly fine, but underneath I was getting worse and worse over a matter of years. Whatever this illness was, it, took different forms, with different worries and fears ruining more and more aspects of my life. What once started as severe social anxiety â€" to the extent I used to throw up â€" it began to morph into something even more consuming. At university I was able to hide this and focus on other things to get by, so it would come and go. However, desperately wanting to do well on my placement year, away from the support network of home and the relaxed nature of university life, I finally realised that everything really was not okay. For a long time I knew that things weren’t right, but I never had an explanation for what I was going through. I have always found exams and revision time very difficult. I can’t switch off, and get burnt out as a result as I am always ‘on’. Slowly the working world began to have the same effect on me and different scenarios would run through my mind all evening. I struggled to relax and was constantly on edge. I would end up having about an hour each day where I could process thoughts ‘naturally’ and didn’t feel gripped by anxiety. This was on top of my issues that had developed through university and eventually everything became overwhelming. Through the year I got more paranoid about situations that my mind had magnified until during my 21st birthday celebrations, I broke down to my girlfriend about a situation that any normal person would be able to comprehend rationally. It now turns out I suffer from severe OCD. Obsessive Compulsive Behaviour is an illness which is commonly misunderstood, often by people who tidy their house, or order objects in a certain way, as they confess they are ‘OCD about that kind of thing’. These jokes trivialise how OCD can hijack someone’s life. OCD can have such a severe impact on someone’s quality of life that the World Health Organisation put OCD in the top ten of most disabling illnesses. OCD is an anxiety disorder caused by a lack of blood flow to the area of the brain which produces Serotonin, the thought-regulating chemical, and as a result OCD sufferers cannot process their worries rationally and move on from them. A concern with dirt and tidiness is just one of the many ways someone with OCD can be plagued by this illness. Other obsessions can include looking for symmetry, but to the extent that they would worry a family member would be hurt if all the things in the room weren’t symmetrical. That is where the C for Compulsive Behaviour comes in. To get rid of the anxious obsessions that their brain is stuck on, to the extent that they think of the same thing literally hundreds of times a day, OCD sufferers develop habits or compulsions to relieve this anxiety. Naturally, those who fear contamination and dirt wash their hands, however the OCD makes them do this irrationally until they are red raw. Others may need to check things over and over; those concerned with hurting others, for instance, can have to retrace their route to work to ensure they haven’t run anyone over on the way. Imagine the trauma of this each day. There still remains a stigma in today’s society around admitting you are finding things tough, particularly for men who are told to ‘man up’. To someone who is struggling to understand this mental illness, the OCD feeling to me is a mix between the worst anxiety you feel when hungover combined with the stress of exam season â€" literally constantly. I would look forward to the moment of respite when I woke up before the OCD would kick in, and go to bed worn out from fighting my brain all day. What made the OCD worse was the stigma of my fears and these would even seep into my nightmares. The OCD would tell me all kind of things that I never wanted to come true and naturally I resisted and hated this. This is just one of the reasons why it takes an average of 11 years for an OCD sufferer to be diagnosed, for them to talk about what they are going through. The irony of OCD is that it is the disease of worriers â€" the OCD becomes worse as you become more alarmed and upset by it. The more you try and resist a thought, the more you think about it, and hence OCD gets more and more consuming. This is called the ironic process theory, and whilst going through the worst period of this, on several occasions I thought I was going genuinely insane, would be institutionalised and considered ending my life. There still remains a stigma in today’s society around admitting you are finding things tough, particularly for men who are told to ‘man up’. It is little wonder the male suicide rates are three times higher than women’s in the UK, and 75% of suicides are men. To explain the scale of this problem, suicide is the biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK and 84 men take their own life each week. Even if someone appears fine, it does not mean they are, and you only need to look at the sad cases of Avicii and Robin Williams to realise this is true. We need to change that people think they have no choice, and the best way to do this is by talking. It is okay not to be okay. I now feel more confident, happy and just relieved that, more than anything else, what I was going through is normal. There is always a silver lining if you look hard enough though. After my 21st, I took some time to recuperate with my family and began to slowly unload the worries that had weighed me down for so long. I saw a therapist, started counselling and began to take enough tablets to knock out a small cow. A couple of months later I now feel more confident, happy and just relieved that, more than anything else, what I was going through is normal. The key is to talk. Lots of stars have also come out and talked about their struggles in recent times, with Ryan Reynolds, Zayn Malik and Danny Rose all highlighting the issues that they have had with mental health. Enterprise has a host of blogs about physical and invisible illnesses, and this is just one of the many ways in which it builds a culture of acceptance, and from these examples I knew I could be honest about my diagnosis at work. I summoned up the courage to talk to a selection of close people and found it so empowering. On a personal level, the more I have shared with people, the more I have learnt that everyone has their own hidden ‘bumps and bruises’. I am just thankful that there are people out there who are willing to listen and help, and take people as they are. If you want to work in a world leading company that puts its emphasis on employee wellbeing, search and apply to Enterprises  Graduate Management programme.

Move from Losing to Acquiring Clients - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Move from Losing to Acquiring Clients - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Tired of erring with clients? Joel confessed he made a huge error with a long-standing client. He was hired as their sales consultant to drive sales. You can imagine the past few years were not stellar but the company did manage to make the numbers they needed. So Joel was able to continue on a month to month basis as their consultant. However, as the economy is trying hard to improve, the sales for the company have not inched up but instead remained stagnant. Being in a routine, Joel continued the same strategies, the same interaction with management, and the same monthly billing. Unfortunately, management viewed the fact that while the economy was picking up while their numbers are not that it must be because Joel was not performing to his best potential. They felt he had become complacent so they terminated his services. With some embarrassment, Joel admitted he should have strategically considered where the company was, the changes in the market landscape and how he could have incorporated the two. In addition, he should have asked for quarterly meetings with management to get their insights on the current business, discussed possible new ideas and most importantly, kept everyone in the loop. Had Joel made meetings a part of his business plan and included key players, he would have had a pulse on the thought of the day and known how to best steer the sales team. Sadly, he did none of the above and is in need of finding a new client. On a positive note, he recognizes how to improve services in the future. The same week, but on the other end of the spectrum, Jennifer confessed she shared too much information with the company with whom she was contracting. Tempted to answer a question that was asked of her, she revealed a conflict of interest that got her fired. She said the moment the words left her mouth she knew she was in trouble. Jennifer now knows when a challenging question arises to take a deep breath and then carefully ask why the question is being asked. It may be for an entirely different reason than what was assumed. You can see between the two stories is a question of balance in communication. It’s wise to make yourself as available as possible and speak to as many as possible within an organization so everyone gets to know you. When sensitive matters arise be certain to get all of the decision makers in one room to have an honest and forthright conversation in order to eliminate any misunderstanding all the while monitoring what you say. When management sees you working in this manner, they will give you the benefit of the doubt and let you do your best to turn things around. In the end, you may develop a lifetime client. Developing a returning and referring clientele builds your personal brand best and is what puts you on the wave of the Smooth Sale! This includes including your education, experience, skills, and so on. When the hiring manager receives your resume, he or she will evaluate whether you are suitable for the job.The service also provides a resume writing package. This is not necessarily a full resume writing package but it is a supplement that is designed to save you time and money. In other words, you do not have to hire a professional to write your resume. This package contains sample resumes that are professionally written and arranged by the service. The packages come with two types of services. The first service is a four-page sample resume. The second service is a free sample interview service. The full service gives you five pages of samples and a quote. In return for the free service, you agree to use the sample for three years. For the service it is a one time fee.The price point varies depending on the length of service requested. This is because they offer different packages. These services are provided for free. The number one complaint with the servo services is that you have to wait for them to get back to you and then they do not have a large enough customer base to cover their customer base. But, if you are a busy person and are looking for a career change or you are looking for a quick job, the servo s ervices are perfect for you.

Three Preventable Communication Mishaps Job Seekers Make

Three Preventable Communication Mishaps Job Seekers Make What you say isnt always perceived the way you intend. These are three examples of communication mishaps job seekers make. Have you really considered what people think when you talk with them? In other words, what is the real interpretation of your message? Do you know what judgements or assumptions the listener jumped to because of what youve said and how youve said it? Whether your excuse is that you were taught not to brag about yourself, you were nervous, or   something else, you can and should be mindful of the words you use! Here are three communication problems that hurt job seekers and three fixes to improve the quality of your message during networking conversations, job interviews, and on resumes. Tada! I am Unemployed! You dont need to introduce yourself by confessing you are laid off! Sharing this information about yourself too early in the conversation can  distract the listener. The person either makes assumptions, feels sorry for you or worse, reminds them of their own job search saga. They may be thinking one of these things: Poor thing, this is a terrible time to be unemployed. Wonder what they did to get laid off? How are they ever going to find a job right now? Wow, it stinks to be you! Your introduction is about sharing the the best information about YOURSELF! The fix Focus your introduction on why youre great at what you do and what makes you unique and memorable. Summarize how you have helped previous employers by highlighting specific skill sets or including an example of a problem you have solved. Remember, this is a marketing campaign. You want to communicate a distinct message that will catch attention for the right reasonsâ€"you are talented at what you do. What you really want to say: When asked what you do, keep it short and positive. For instance, you could say: I help nonprofits gain greater awareness in the community by building partnerships with similar organizations. This collaborative approach grew membership by 25 percent last year. Me, Me, Me In a job interview, either over the phone or in person, you can send the wrong message by putting too much emphasis on your own needs and wants. Here are two examples: Interviewer: I am afraid you wouldnt be content with the salary we could offer. Job Seeker: It is less than I used to make but I could probably make it work within my personal budget. Or Interviewer: Were excited to offer you the job. Would you be able to start in two weeks? Job Seeker: Well, I suppose I could get things wrapped up in two, maybe three weeks. It is human nature to take care of our financial needs and make sure we have food and shelter. However, overtly putting your needs before your potential employer is like asking to see the engagement ring on a first date. During your job search, always show concern for the needs and interests of the employer first. The fix Dont be afraid to tell the employer what they want to hear. Your interest in the job comes across in the words you use and the tone of your voice. Be the most enthusiastic you can be, and be convincing. If they feel youre not interested in the job, youre unlikely to get an offer. What you really want to say: In the first example, you could politely ask the interviewer, What would make you think that? You could go on to explain why youre interested in the position and provide a specific example of what you will do to solve the employers problem. Money usually isnt the only concern in hiring. In the second situation, avoid sounding hesitant or delaying the start date without a strong reason. A planned vacation, needing to complete an important project or no excuse at all, but enthusiastically asking if you could start later. Ummm, Im Good with Words You know you should use keywords from the job posting in your resume. However, you must select the right words to get the interview. But using generic terms or ones that you dont actually possess is a problem. None of the statements below would differentiate you from the hundreds of other candidates; they are trite, and even worse, unsubstantiated. And by the way, arent these minimal work requirements? Excellent interpersonal skills, both written and verbal Adept at problem solving Work well as a team player or as an individual contributor However, you are great at building teams by soliciting feedback and creating accountability. Focus on that! The fix First, use the right type of keywords, such as specific job skills and technologies. Second, include specific benefits or outcomes of your work. Develop and use STAR stories. What you really want to say: Created monthly accounts receivable report for management and requested to present to senior management during committee meeting. Identified unnecessary forms and implemented solution for copying cost reduction, resulting in $2,000 in monthly savings. Collaborated with interdepartmental team to initiate new customer service procedures; implemented company-wide within two months and decreased customer complaints by four percent. Say What You Really Mean As you craft your answers to questions, pay attention to what the receiver of your message really cares about. Incorporate both their interests as well as your own. And always be sincere and truthful. A version of this article originally appeared on US News World Report On Careers

Look at every available option to land a job -

Look at every available option to land a job - I watched 20/20 last night. A very interesting show with the authors of Superfreakonomics, Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner.   James Altucher from the Wall Street Journal writes: SuperFreakonomics, by the economist Steven Levitt and writer Stephen Dubner, is not only a book with mind-blowing ideas, innovative research and quality investigative journalism, its also a story about creativity and what it takes to get the mindset to turn conventional concepts upside down. (Follow the link to learn more about the book. Suffice to say they have some pretty outrageous ideas and suggestions for solving problems. For example, to alleviate global warming, send a hose into the sky. Really.) The point is that they are clearly thinking outside of the box. Lets say their ideas would blow box wrappers away! What does this have to do with you? More often than not, I believe that job seekers with the gumption to see beyond the obvious are the ones who land the jobs. Several points struck me when I was watching this story on 20/20. I tweeted them (see below). Coincidentally, these tweets came right after I shared a link to Harry Urschels post listing reasons job seekers often give for not getting the job. Harry Urschel (@eExecutives) notes: I regularly hear people tell me that they cant get a job because: Im too old and face age discrimination. Im too young and companies are hiring older more experienced people. I dont have a degree. Im over qualified with my graduate degree. They are only hiring men. They are only hiring women. I have physical restrictions. Companies want more experience with a particular skill. Companies dont want much experience these days. I have too many jobs on my resume. Ive been at one company too long. Companies are only hiring consultants. Companies are focused on diversity, and Im not diverse. Im a minority and face discrimination. Its a Good Old Boys network, and Im not a Good Old Boy. and many, many more. He goes on: After 23 years in the executive search business, I can honestly tell you that many of the traditional barriers that used to be common, are all but gone.   Conventional Wisdom about age, or race, disability, or sex discrimination just dont exist anywhere near where they used to even 10 or 20 years ago.   Certainly there are instances where it occurs, however, they are isolated and rare.   Most people that are convinced that they are being singled out though, find discrimination, or negative business reasons everywhere. Even more interesting, Harry comments: In fact, for almost any person that gives a reason why they cannot get hired, you can find another person with the same circumstances that got a job.   It may take more effort. It may take a different approach. However, the biggest stumbling block to getting a job is often the mindset of the seeker. Be sure to read his full post HERE. This reminds me a lot of my friend Stephanie A. Lloyds post, 75 Reasons You Didnt Get the Job. An excerpt: You laughed too much. You didnt show a sense of humor. You talked too loud. You talked too softly. You seemed arrogant. You didnt show enough confidence. You were late. You arrived *way* too early. Your resume is too long. Your resume is too short. Your hair is too long. Your hair is too short. HmmCant win, can you? The fact is, there is no perfect job search technique. We coaches suggest best practices, advise what not to do, but there is really no magic wandno silver bullet. So back to FreakonomicsAre you looking at EVERY AVAILABLE OPTION? Questions You Need to be Asking the Interviewer

Questions You Need to be Asking the Interviewer Spread the loveMany people go into job interviews expecting something akin to an interrogation. Oh, they understand that there will be  key interview questions to determine whether they’re a good fit for the job.  Still, many job-seekers expect that questioning to be much more difficult than it generally ends up being. The fact is that job interviews shouldn’t be terrifying. After all, it’s not like an action movie where the hero ends up with a bright light shining in his face while questions are screamed at him by his interrogators.Just as important, that questioning is anything but one-sided. Yes, that’s right; the hiring manager shouldn’t be the only one asking questions. You should be asking questions as well! In fact, your success may depend on it, since asking the right questions can boost your chances of securing that job.But what type of questions should you ask? We have the answer to that question! Here are  9 key interview questions you can ask in your next interv iew to increase your odds of landing that job.Questions to Ask at an Interview“Would you like me to clarify anything?”It’s not enough to just answer an interviewer’s questions and get to the end of the interview. In fact, none of that will matter if you were at all unclear in your answers. By asking whether they need anything clarified, you can help to ensure that they fully understood your answers and have the information they need to make a great decision.Of all the  9 key interview  questions, this is the one that can help  focus the hiring manager on your qualifications. He or she may realize that there are other questions that need to be answered. So, be sure that you are properly prepared to answer. Along with this question, there are other questions that you may want to ask â€" so prepare for those as well. To help you prepare, use business writing tools like  Easy Word Count  or  Grammarix.“What can an individual in this role achieve in six months / a year / ten ye ars?”Remember, an interview isn’t just about determining whether you’re right for the job. It should also help you determine whether the job is right for you. This is a great question to help you make that determination. It can provide valuable insight about the company’s structure, and opportunities that might be available in the future.Be on the lookout for vague, uncertain answers, or answers that suggest that there is no path for career progression. That could be a clear indicator that the company culture is weak or stagnant. Keep that in mind when you’re trying to decide whether to take the job.“What are the most important qualities to have in this role?”This question can help you to better illustrate your qualifications. It enables you to directly match your skills to the job’s requirements. Remember, every job will have a set of key traits that you must have to achieve success in that role. It could be leadership, creativity, or even an eye for detail. If the a nswer includes traits that you already possess, that’s a great sign that you’re a good fit. If not, you may need to draw upon related skills and qualities, or accept that the job might not be right for you.“Do you have any concerns regarding my qualifications?”You need self-confidence to ask this question, since it invites the interviewer to critique your strengths and weaknesses in a direct manager. Still, Kathryn Castro, a Recruiting Consultant at  Ukwritings, suggests that there are real benefits to this approach:“However, by giving the recruiter the opportunity to discuss anything that was playing on their minds, you’ll have the opportunity to prove yourself. This question can also be changed to address any work gaps you might have in your career or gaps in your education.”“Does the company offer courses or continued learning opportunities?”Of course, this question is only relevant if you plan on building a career at the company and view the job as something mo re than a temporary solution for immediate joblessness. The good news is that this simple question can offer a great deal of insight into the company’s culture. It will reveal how the company feels about investing in its workers and could give you a hint about where you might be in five years’ time.  â€œWhy does the position matter to the company?”If job satisfaction is your number one concern, then this is one of the 9 key interview  questions that you simply must ask. And let’s be honest â€" on a certain level, job satisfaction is an important concern for all of us.With this question, you will gain valuable insight about how the company views your role. Is it a priority for management and leadership? Is it considered a critical part of operations?  More importantly, how will you fit into the company’s short and long-term plans?  â€œWhat are the biggest challenges facing individuals in this position?”This and similar questions about the position offer important insight a s well. You already know that every job has its challenges. With this question, you get those challenges out on the table, eliminating future surprises. That can help you to determine whether you’re up for the job, possibly saving you and the business time and money.Perhaps more important, however, is the image that this question helps to convey. By focusing on the specific challenges that need to be overcome, you will reveal your competence and indicate that you have strong problem-solving skills.  â€œWhy do you enjoy working for the company?”Though there are 9 key interview  questions you can and should ask an interviewer, this has to rank near the top of my list of favorites. Look, it’s not common for job-seekers to ask this question â€" and there’s an advantage there. It immediately puts the interviewer on the spot, and often leads to some very useful insight about the company’s culture. Just watch the reaction and listen to the response, and you’ll learn everything you need to know.  â€œDo you need me to do anything else?”This is a great question to ensure that you have done everything you can do to improve your odds of getting hired. It can also help you to stand out from the crowd, since any job candidates are too eager to end the interview once the last questions have been answered.Besides, it is important to know whether there are additional steps. Interviewers may sometimes forget to tell you important things, and that could cause you to miss out on the opportunity when there are deadlines involved. You should also make sure that you have the interviewer’s contact email, so that you can ask additional questions if they come to mind later. When emailing, you can use writing tools like  Boom Essays  and  Essay Roo  to make sure the emails are professional and accurate.Of course, it may seem odd and out of the ordinary to ask an interviewer these types of questions. However, there are clear benefits to doing so. Moreover, you don’t want to do what everyone else is doing! You need to stand out from the crowd and ensure that you’re seen as a cut above your competition. So, be fearless, ask these 9 key interview  questions, and watch those job offers come rolling in!Guest Post by Gloria KoppGloria Kopp is a human resources manager at  Academized.
